CLARET & AMBER
A
new 2-act play by Susan Shillingford.
Inspired and drawn
from the lives and writings of Lucy Maud Montgomery and Emily Carr.
Contemporaries Emily
Carr and Lucy Maud Montgomery encounter each other in a CP hotel garden
in Port Arthur, Ontario (circa 1941) where they chat together over drinks
before dinner.
The two, very different
women reminisce about their turbulent lives and the ups and downs of their
creative careers. As the evening progresses, they reveal some painful personal
secrets while discovering that they share some striking parallels in their
lives and work.
The first in the series
of readings of Claret and Amber,
was presented in the Bateman Gallery at Artspring, in Ganges, Salt Spring
Island, on Saturday October 1st at 7.00 pm. Readers were: Susan Shillingford,
Gloria Saesura, and Geoff Noble.
Future readings are
currently in the works for The Department of Fine Arts, University of Victoria;
BC; Canadian Stage, Toronto, Ontario; Bishop's College, Lennoxville, PQ;
and a venue (TBA) on Prince Edward Island.
